At 70, Atedo Nari Atowari Peterside stands as a towering figure in Nigeria’s economic and social landscape, a man whose life weaves together bold innovation, principled leadership, and an unshakable commitment to nation-building.

As Nigeria celebrates his milestone birthday on July 11, 2025, Peterside’s journey from a prodigious student to a financial titan and advocate for good governance offers a masterclass in how one individual can reshape a country’s future.

Born in 1955 in Port Harcourt, Peterside was raised in a home where excellence was non-negotiable. His father, a renowned ophthalmologist, nurtured his intellect and discipline. At just 10, Peterside enrolled at King’s College, Lagos, a precocious start that foreshadowed his meteoric rise. He earned a B.Sc. in Economics from The City University, London, followed by an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics in 1977. Later, Harvard Business School’s Owner/President Management Programme sharpened his leadership acumen, setting the stage for a transformative career.

In 1989, at 33, Peterside launched the Investment Banking and Trust Company (IBTC) from a modest Lagos office, defying Nigeria’s economic turbulence. His vision turned IBTC into a powerhouse, listing on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 2003 and merging with Chartered Bank in 2005 to form IBTC Chartered Bank.

The 2007 partnership with Standard Bank of South Africa birthed Stanbic IBTC, now a linchpin of Nigeria’s financial sector. As CEO until 2007 and chairman until 2017, Peterside championed innovation and inclusion, notably appointing women to senior roles in the 1990s a bold move in a male-dominated industry. His leadership earned him the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2020 African Banker Awards.

Peterside’s influence stretches far beyond banking. He advised three Nigerian presidents and six Central Bank governors, shaping economic policy with clarity and conviction. As a key member of the National Economic Management Team under Presidents Yar’Adua and Jonathan, and as chairman of the National Council on Privatisation’s Technical Committee from 2011 to 2015, he drove the privatization of Nigeria’s power sector, a reform aimed at tackling chronic electricity shortages. In 2003, as chairman of the Committee on Corporate Governance of Public Companies, he authored Nigeria’s first Code of Best Practices for Public Companies, cementing his legacy as a guardian of corporate integrity.

Yet Peterside’s heart lies in empowering Nigeria’s youth. Through the Anap Foundation, founded in 2007, he has pushed for good governance and civic engagement. The 2021 GoNigeria initiative mobilized millions of young Nigerians to vote in the 2023 elections, urging them to reject violence and embrace democratic power. During the 2020 #EndSARS protests, Peterside’s outspoken critique of state overreach and his call for reform resonated widely. That same year, his Anap Foundation COVID-19 Think Tank tackled pandemic challenges, showcasing his knack for mobilizing solutions in crises. In 2015, he ventured into luxury aviation with Anap Business Jets Limited, blending entrepreneurial flair with social impact.

Peterside’s personal life is as vibrant as his professional one. Married for 35 years to Abiodun (Dudun) Peterside, he cherishes their partnership, which shone brightly at their daughter Tokini’s 2022 wedding, where his dance moves stole the show. A lover of boating, polo, reading, and travel, Peterside balances intensity with joy. In June 2024, he stepped down from his non-executive roles at Standard Bank Group and The Standard Bank of South Africa, closing a 35-year banking chapter but doubling down on philanthropy through Anap Foundation.

As Nigeria toasts Atedo Peterside at 70, his life reminds us that true leadership builds bridges between vision and reality, wealth and purpose, today and tomorrow. From a small office in Lagos to the national stage, Peterside has shown what it means to dream boldly and deliver with integrity. His legacy, etched in institutions and inspired lives, will shape Nigeria for decades to come.
