Put two world maps side by side and ask a child which continent looks bigger. On one, Greenland appears almost as large as Africa. On the other, Africa stretches across the page, unmistakably vast and central.
Nothing about the physical Earth has changed. Africa has not expanded, nor has Greenland shrunk. The difference lies entirely in cartography—specifically, in how human beings choose to translate a three-dimensional globe onto a two-dimensional sheet of paper. It is a distinction that recently moved from classroom walls straight to the floor of the United Nations General Assembly.
A Campaign for Scale
In a major diplomatic push led by Togo and backed by the African Union, the UN overwhelmingly adopted the “Correct the Map” initiative. The resolution calls on educational institutions, technology platforms, and international bodies to move away from legacy projections in favor of equal-area alternatives, such as the Equal Earth projection.
The vote passed with 164 nations in favor, six abstentions, and a single vote against: the United States. While non-binding, the resolution highlights a key dynamic in modern international relations: the growing battle over soft power, historical memory, and symbolic representation in a multipolar world.
The Legacy of 1569
To understand why this issue persists, one must look at history. The ubiquitous standard map of the modern era the Mercator projection was created in 1569 by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator.
Mercator was not designing a tool for geopolitics or colonial propaganda; he was solving an engineering problem for European mariners. His map allowed sailors to draw straight lines between two points and follow a constant compass heading across ocean trade routes.
The Mathematical Trade-Off: To maintain straight navigational lines on a flat grid, landmasses farther from the equator must be stretched.
The High-Latitude Inflation: The northern latitudes – Europe, North America, and Russia are visually magnified. Meanwhile, equatorial regions bear the brunt of this distortion.
The Reality: In physical space, Africa spans over 30 million square kilometers large enough to fit the contiguous United States, China, India, Western Europe, and Japan within its borders simultaneously. Yet Mercator renders it roughly equal in size to Greenland, which is one-fourteenth its actual size.
The problem was never Mercator’s math; it was the habit that followed. A specialized 16th-century navigational chart quietly transformed into the default blueprint for global education.
Cartography, Power, and Psychological Mindsets
Maps are rarely neutral objects; historically, they have served as instruments of administrative, economic, and imperial control. While formal colonialism ended decades ago across most of Africa, its visual habits remained pinned to classroom walls.
When generations grow up internalizing a world layout that visually minimizes their homeland, it subtly conditions how scale, centrality, and influence are perceived. By spearheading the UN vote, African leaders are making a simple point: in global politics, proportion is a form of power. For once, Africa was not simply the object being mapped, but an active player shaping how the world is visualized.
Representation Versus Transformation
Yet, we must be clear-eyed about what a map can and cannot accomplish. Cartographic accuracy is a meaningful symbolic shift, but symbolic victory has clear limits
What it fixes: It challenges an inherited image of smallness, ensuring educational graphics reflect actual relative landmass rather than a distorted 16th-century grid.
What it cannot fix: It cannot construct cross-border energy grids, diversify commodity-reliant economies, reform domestic institutions, or build a factory.
A continent can be drawn at its true scale and still struggle to convert its vast natural resources into broad prosperity. The UN resolution ensures the world no longer visually underestimates Africa. The far harder task remaining for its leaders is building the economic, industrial, and institutional power needed to match that physical reality on the page.
