Ooni of Ife: A King for a New Generation

On a humid afternoon in Ile-Ife, the cradle of Yoruba civilization, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi sits beneath the towering arches of his palace, draped in flowing white agbada, his beaded crown glistening like sunlight on water.

To the elders gathered, he is the custodian of tradition, the 51st Ooni in a lineage that traces back to Oduduwa, the mythical progenitor of the Yoruba race. To the youth clustered outside, snapping selfies as they await an audience, he is something more: a monarch who speaks their language, walks their streets, and insists that their future is his mission.

I am a youth on the throne of Oduduwa, says the Ooni in a measured tone, his words carrying the weight of history but also the urgency of the present. Over 70 percent of Nigerians are young. If we do not give them belonging, what hope do we have as a nation?

A Throne Steeped in History

Ile-Ife, often called the spiritual heartland of the Yoruba, is more than an ancient city. It is, in myth and memory, the place where the gods touched earth. Archaeologists marvel at its bronze heads and terracotta sculptures, evidence of a sophisticated civilization that thrived as early as the 12th century. To Yoruba faithful, Ife is the navel of humanity itself. The Ooni, enthroned in December 2015 after emerging from the Giesi ruling house, is both a spiritual guide and a political bridge; a king expected to safeguard heritage while navigating the demands of a modern Nigeria.

Healing Old Wounds, Building New Paths

Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Oni of Ife

One of Oba Ogunwusi’s earliest acts as king was symbolic but powerful. In January 2016, he attended Modakeke Day, ending decades of hostility between Ife and its neighboring town. He brushed aside protocols, recalls palace aide Olanrewaju Omidiora, “and walked among the people. That gesture healed more than a century of bitterness.”

It was not his only reconciliatory move. He declared Ile-Ife a tourism zone and unveiled the ambitious Ife Grand Resort project, designed to employ widows of past conflicts and create jobs for thousands of young people. Within months, over 3,000 youths were working on the project. Peace must bring prosperity, he said at the launch.

The People’s King

Beyond brick and mortar, the Ooni has made children and youth the centerpiece of his reign. On Children’s Day 2018, he hosted 5,000 pupils in his palace, urging the federal government to establish a Ministry of Children’s Affairs. The future of Nigeria is in their hands, he declared. Yet nobody is giving them any sense of belonging.

Through the House of Oduduwa Foundation and the Hopes Alive Initiative (HAI), Ogunwusi has paid tuition for indigent students, distributed equipment for farming and small enterprises, and awarded scholarships to hundreds across the Southwest. In 2018, he covered school fees for 270 secondary students. When a king pays your school fees, says Adebisi, a beneficiary now studying engineering, you don’t just study for yourself, you study for your community.

Culture as Diplomacy

But Ogunwusi’s influence extends far beyond Osun State. In 2018, he led a Yoruba cultural mission to Salvador, Bahia, in Brazil, where Afro-Brazilians trace ancestral ties to Yoruba slaves. Standing in a packed Afro-Brazilian temple, he proclaimed Bahia the Yoruba capital of the Americas. The move cemented cultural diplomacy between Nigeria and Brazil, culminating years later in bilateral trade talks that leaned on Yoruba heritage as soft power.

In 2023, he went further, recognizing Quingoma, Bahia, as Yoruba territory and instituting an annual Isese Day in Brazil. We may be oceans apart, but we are one family, he told the crowd. That same year, he was honored as “Grand Patron of Traditional Institutions in Africa,” praised for his visionary leadership and cultural influence across the continent.

An Entrepreneur on the Throne

Unlike many monarchs, Oba Ogunwusi arrived at the palace with an entrepreneur’s mindset. A successful real estate developer before his coronation, he has injected business thinking into cultural leadership. His projects include agricultural partnerships, cocoa nurseries, heritage-site renovations, and energy donations in Ile-Ife. He’s turning culture into GDP, says Dr. Akin Olawoye, a historian at Obafemi Awolowo University. It’s a bold experiment: using tradition as economic capital.

A Balanced Legacy

Not all has been without controversy. The Ooni’s personal life, including his multiple marriages and divorces, has fueled tabloids, raising questions about how modern kings balance private choices with public expectations. Some traditionalists grumble at his globe-trotting diplomacy, seeing it as unorthodox. But even critics concede his activism is reshaping what it means to be an African monarch in the 21st century.

Former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Najeem Salaam, credits him with rehabilitating youths and uniting Yoruba monarchs. He has shown the world our rich culture, value, and moral fibers, Salaam says. He is not just a king of tradition, but a king of development.

LOOKING FORWARD

At 50, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi has many years ahead on the throne of Oduduwa. He remains a fixture at the annual Olojo Festival, wearing the sacred Are crown to pray for Yoruba unity, even as he continues to court investors and advocate for youth development.

In a Nigeria grappling with unemployment, division, and cultural erosion, the Ooni of Ife is both a beacon of progress and a lightning rod for criticism. His legacy may ultimately depend not only on his bold initiatives but also on the personal conduct he brings to the most sacred of Yoruba thrones. The lesson is clear: the Ooni of Ife must be more than a reformer or entrepreneur; he must also embody the dignity and moral clarity that the stool of Oduduwa demands.
